Mazda has been successful in churning out remarkably agile and well executed vehicles in the past years and it was using Skyactive technology and engines to produce them. First of these vehicles was the brilliant CX-5 crossover a C/D comparison test winner for two times which had a 2.5 L engine to the lineup as 2014 update. For the 2016 the CX-5 is being offered with mid-cycle refresh and significant revisions.

All the core ingredients remain in the refreshed model which includes pleasant and clean exterior styling which is not over crowded. The sole change on the outside is the horizontal striped grille and the LED signature lighting which reflects the headlights optionally available. Both these items are included in the Technology package. For the CX-5 the 17- inch wheels are standard and the freshly designed nine-inch wheels are optional.

Inside the cabin the CX-5 collects the latest infotainment and connectivity setup of the Mazda named ominously as Human-Machine Interface. The center console has a control knob akin to the German luxury cars mounted on it. The Mazda infotainment system has been used in several models earlier and has been found to be simple to operate and get quick outputs to your input. More storage has been added to the interior which has been facilitated by the removal of the traditional emergency braking handle.

An electric powered button started brake system has been installed in place. The interior material also has been upgraded and the instrument panel can be ordered in three options which also include piano black and aluminum trim. The black leather in the interior has been joined by the light color parchment for upholstery option and also a tan and black cloth option. Safety system added to driver assistance has been upgraded and the 2016 CX-5 could also be armed with the blind-spot sighting, collision mitigating brake system, cross-traffic alert and radar cruiser control to adjust speed.

The base engine for the model is the 2.4 Liter four cylinder naturally aspirated engine generating 155hp and 150 lb-ft torque and an exclusive six speed manual gearbox with front-wheel-drive has been given. The 2.5 Liter offering 184hp and 185 lb-ft is optional and it is offered with a six speed automatic torque converter transmission which also presents you with a drive- mode selector. This option allows you to customize its response to your whims. A stick is also added to the CX-5 optionally with 2.5 L engine. Though the front-wheel-drive is the standard features you can optionally go for the all-wheel-drive.

Fuel economy rate too is not far from satisfactory as the models with both the front-wheel-drive models rating 26mpg in city and the 2.0 L with 35mpg and the 2.5 L with 33mpg for highway.  When you drive the all-wheels the average is 24/30 for the 2.5 L. The all-wheel-drive 2.0 L was averaging 28mpg for the 2013 model when it was ridden for 40, 000 miles. The secret behind the Mazda CX-5’s fuel economy rating is the lesser amount of power output which it scores over the Ford Escape and VW Tiguan.
