Pontiac Automobile: When Horse Power Mattered

Pontiac was General Motor’s partner make automobile for Oakland and the brand was incorporated in the year 1926. The Pontiac motor company was headed by Susan Docherty who is the GMNA Vice president of Buick-Pontiac-GMC and had its headquarters in Detroit, Michigan, USA. The brand remained a companion make for the Chevrolet brand during its entire life. However after its launch it took off and gained popularity quickly ultimately displacing Oakland brand by the year 1933. Pontiac specialized in mainstream automobiles and was marketed by GM as performance division for several years. The brand was marketed in the US, Canada and Mexico and was sold as a low cost vehicle for most of its tenure in Canada.

Owing to restructuring plans and financial issues General Motors on 27th Apr 2009 announced the discontinuance of brand Pontiac by 2010. The company further announced that it wanted to concentrate more on its four core brands Buick, Chevrolet, GMC and Cadillac in Northern America. The last Pontiac was built in 2009-2010 and the last of its franchise expired on 31st October, 2010.

When first introduced the Pontiac weighed a hefty 1000 pounds and was a high wheeler vehicle. It integrated two cylinder water cooled with 12 HP engine and its first prototype was exhibited in the year 1907. The predecessor firm Pontiac Spring and Wagon Works produced the vehicle and later it merged with the Oakland Motor Company incorporated by Edward M Murphy in the year 1908. Pontiac name was chosen because the headquarters was situated in Oakland County, Pontiac, Michigan. In the year 1909 the GM president William C Durant bought 50% of the shares in the company and bought the rest after the untimely death of Murphy.

Pontiac came up with several popular models and they include Pontiac in 1928, Pontiac Master Six Coupe in 1936, Pontiac Silver Streak Convertible Coupe in 1948, Pontiac Star Chief 1955, Bonneville in 1959, Pontiac Bonneville Brougham in 1964, Pontiac GTO Convertible in 1969, Pontiac Grand Am in 1973, Pontiac Astre & Grand Ville models in 1975, Firebird Trans-Am & Fiero Sport Coupe in 1985, Grand Prix in 1990, Montana Minivan in early 2000, a 2006 GTO LS2 V8 model and finally the last model Pontiac G6. The last Pontiac was built in 2010 in an American plant and the company became defunct after that. General Motors with the intention of consolidating operations decided to shut off certain brands and Pontiac was one of them.
