Oldsmobile was a renowned name in the world of cars and one of the oldest of the car manufacturing in the US. It was headquartered at Lansing, Michigan, US and was founded in the year 1897 by Ransom E. Olds. Between 1987 and 2004 the company was involved in manufacturing mainstream and luxury vehicles and belongs to the Parent company General Motors the American automobile giant. During its 107 year tenure the company produced a stupendous 35.2 million and 14 million out of them at its Michigan unit. The company was phased out in 2004 and defunct since then.
Oldsmobile in Old Times
Started in 1897 by Olds the company reined as the top automobile manufacturing company for a few years till it ran into financial difficulties and General Motors bought it in the year 1908. Oldsmobile Curved Dash was the first car that was produced in an assembly line and subjected to mass production. A fire in the factory destroyed all prototypes in 1901 and the curved dash was the only one to survive. The company shifted to new premises and started production of the model and it achieved the highest point of the company in the year in 1910 limited with its 42 inch high wheels and limited white tires manufactured at the factory. The car cost more than the cost of a three-bedroom house at US$4, 600 at that time. In the 1940 the company automobile also featured the first automatic gear transmission with four speeds forward. In the 1950s the company experienced setbacks due to the Second World War engineered recession. When it came back to manufacturing its automobiles featured the famous V8 Rocket engines that offered performance and speed.

The company came out with notable models such as Oldsmobile 442 (1964), a muscle car, Oldsmobile Cutlass a midsized car manufactured during 1961-1999, Oldsmobile F-85, a compact sedan, Oldsmobile Vista cruiser (1964-1977), a cutlass station wagon with stretched wheelbase, Oldsmobile Starfire, luxury hardtop coupe manufactured during 1961-66, Oldsmobile Jetstar-I produced between 1964-66, Oldsmobile Delta 88 (1965-89) and Oldsmobile Tornado manufactured during 1966-1992.
Oldsmobile has contributed largely to the world of car racing and was well known in the NASCAR racing circuit and it provided to be highly competitive with its Rocket 88 engine. The Cutlass took over until General Motors clamped its entry. It also took part in the IndyCar series, IMSA GT, and the Trans Am Series. The closing of Oldsmobile is part of General Motors policy to larger consolidation of its companies.
