Mercedes-Benz, the World's Oldest Car Maker – A History of Innovation

One of the best known brands on the planet, Mercedes-Benz belongs to Daimler AG and represents a multinational division headquartered in Stuttgart, Germany. A brand of meticulous engineering, it is in charge of the production of trucks, coaches, buses and luxury cars.

Karl Benz and the High Standards He Set

Basically, Mercedes-Benz invented the car in 1886 – and hasn't stopped reinventing it ever since. In 1886, Karl Benz advances his petrol-powered Benz Patent Motorwagen, seen as the first automobile of the world. Together with BMW and Audi, Mercedes-Benz is part of the “German Big 3”, the country's top automakers to sell luxury vehicles. The brand's initial slogan was “The best or nothing”. The automobiles start to get marketed in 1901.

The Mercedes-Benz Diversity

Besides the regular passenger cars, the German car maker has been producing trucks, buses, coaches, vans and even limousines. The truck line is currently a part of the Daimler Trucks division. Among the vans, the most popular models are the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, Vario and Vito. As for the limousines, the bulletproof Mercedes-Benz 600 has been the choice of many diplomats. The company has been the source of many technological innovations, especially concerning safety. All these became common for cars everywhere. Also, the speeds earned the brand a well-deserved prestige. Its vehicles are being produced or assembled in 26 countries. Other important novelties were the twin carburetors, the flaring front fenders, the honeycomb radiator, the V-twin cylinder engine now used with motorcycles, the foot accelerator, the interrupted low tension electric ignition and more. The roster of new achievements is never ending.

The Mercedes-Benz – McLaren Partnership

Starting with 2003 and until 2009, the company released a limited series of sports cars through McLaren cars. What resulted was the Mercedes-Benz SRL McLaren, meaning an extended collaboration. Before this, Mercedes engines were used by the Formula 1 team McLaren-Mercedes. Then, McLaren, was set to develop its own car.

The More Recent Years

The company has crossed paths with the Maybach ultra-luxury division until recently, in 2013. the production had to be stopped because of unsatisfactory sales. The current lineup is comprised of multipurpose vehicles, saloon, estate and coupes, SUVs, roadsters, mini MPVs, 4-door coupes, luxury coupes, and luxury sedans. In 2010, Attention Assist was introduced. It measures more than 70 parameters at the start of the drive and 'senses' the state of the driver, using the sensors in the car. The driver's behavior is tracked and then compiled, which helps determine drowsiness and other dangerous states.
