A Brief History of the Innovative Mazda
The Japanese machine-tool manufacturer founded in 1920 made a quick switch to producing automobiles. The new compact car producer got its name from the Iranian god Ahura Mazda. The first car for the brand was Mazda-Go, a 3-wheeled truck released in 1931. However, car production didn't continue. As World War II broke out, rifle production became the propriety for Mazda. From 1949 on, the factory got back to its truck model and began exporting it. A 4-wheel truck was consequently launched, the Romper. Mazda 360 Coupe was the company's first passenger car.
What Has Differentiated Mazda
Mazda began producing rotary engines in collaboration with NSU/Wankel, which represented its first partnership, but also a step forward in comparison to the Japanese competitors. Soon, it started to develop lightweight models that would also benefit of sufficient power. These qualities were drawing in many customers. Mazda's most successful series were the R100 and RX models, which have even opened the gates to the most sought-after, market, the one in the US.
A Solution to the 70's Crisis
The crowd would not be pleased with the rotary engines that were consuming significant quantities of fuel. The company, however, had an alternative to these – the piston engines. Thus it had avoided a big sales drop. Mazda turned then to the 4-cylinder engine model. The Familia and Capella series were launched at that time. The sporty car lines were maintained, but produced in a different plant. The RX7 and RX8 were bearing piston engines and were successful. The same were the Miata and MX-5 models.
A Joint Venture with Ford
After having invested in Mazda, Ford Motor Company returned for a new joint venture in 1991. The Explorer venture was a bad investment for Mazda but a fruitful one for the Americans. To have its gain, Mazda continued to focus on its alternative engine technologies, thus introducing in 1995 its Miller cycle engine. However, Ford later acquired 39% of the company. An important consequence was sharing the platforms and engines.
Past Achievements and Experimental Technology for the Future
Mazda produced 1.3 million vehicles during its active years. By production, it was the world's 15th largest automobile manufacturer in 2011. The company with almost 40,000 employees worldwide is now bound to experiment even more with its automobile technology. The next step is creating a hydrogen-powered vehicle. Mazda already has one such prototype, and it has reached an autonomy level of 200 km.
