Maserati – A History of Racing and Luxury Cars

For some, the Maserati name reminds of the amazing GT cars of the 60's and 70's. The Italian car maker was a family business, a result of passion for driving. Maserati is one of the just 4 automotive manufacturing companies that were founded on racing, the other (younger) 3 being Ferrari, Lotus and McLaren.

Maserati History before the Production of the Brand's Own Cars

In the beginning, there were 7 Maserati brothers and about 5 of them to handle the business. The brand has created exotic and at the same time practical vehicles. At first, they worked for Isotta Fraschini until they started the Officine Alfieri Maserati. The brothers' business was started in Bologna by building different cars for racing purposes – firstly for Diatto, then for themselves. This happened in 1914, and during the same year one of their first cars won the Targa Florio race.

The Brand Born through Racing Success

The first Maserati had a single-cylinder engine and a simple chassis. The vehicles became more powerful with the successive engine upgrades – to 4, 6, 8 cylinders, in parallel mounting. The Maserati trademark was born in 1926, when the first production car was introduced. The brothers committed to both car building and racing. Type 26 was the winner of many races. A famous victory was the one in Indianapolis 500 in 1939, repeated the next year.

Depression Changes

Maserati also faced a decrease in sales with the 70's fuel crisis. The government helped, however, and so the company made its way through. In 1975, it is being resurrected by Alessandro del Tomaso, former race driver, who makes a series of important changes: the design is bulkier and the middle-placed engine is replaced by the front-mounted one.

The Quattroporte Centerpiece

Maserati was centered on production cars, namely the 3500 GT, and launched its 4-door sedan, the Quattroporte, in 1963. Bora, Khamsin and Merak models followed, then the Kyalami. Biturbo was released as the lower priced alternative. In the new century, it was still the Quattroporte to benefit of continuation.

Becoming a Luxury Brand

Fiat takes over Maserati in 1993 and helps it find its former glory through a series of substantial investments. The 2-door coupe 3200 GT is launched in 1999, featuring a twin turbocharged engine. Ferrari was responsible for the transmission and bought about 50% of the business. With the Ferrari input, Maserati became a luxury brand. The firm is now based in Modena, Italy.
