Lincoln – The Luxury for U.S. Presidents and Not Only
Founded in 1920 by Henry Leland, former manager of Cadillac, Lincoln has been an integrating part of Ford since year 1922. The luxury vehicles line is mainly known to North America and was named to honor Abraham Lincoln, Leland's hero.
The Early Difficulties
Lincoln factories started by assembling Liberty aircraft engines for the WWI supply. As the war had ended, it switched to manufacturing luxury vehicles. The Ford purchase was a time of financial trouble. As the car body styling didn't match what other brands offered, the company went bankrupt. By the 40's, all Lincoln cars were based on the Zephyr chassis, the name being discontinued after the war. After it was bought by Ford, Lincoln got to compete directly with Cadillac.
Lincoln Motor Co. - The New Entity
The once-great luxury brand was revived by Ford after decades of understatement. It is not a standalone car maker, but is being kept separate by Ford, as a distinct brand. Lincoln benefits of its own designers, development team, salespeople and showrooms. The designers now have a good focus on the luxury line due to their separate design studio. Ford has a long-term strategy for Lincoln and is set to reinvent the brand. Lincoln has been a part of the company for over 90 years and is finally getting a makeover.
From Presidential Cars to Racing
Lincoln is also known for its presidential cars - it provided the US president with the compulsory official state limousines. The first of the kind was the Lincoln V12 built in 1939. The convertible, named “Sunshine special”, served President Franklin D. Roosevelt until 1948. Other presidents to use Lincolns were Harry S. Truman and John F. Kennedy among others. Although the brand has been centered on luxury cars, it got into the motorsports field as well. During the 50's, it had taken part in the Grand National Stock Car Series. Later in the 80's it continued with the Winston Cup series.
Available Models Today
The cars we are discussing have been remarkable through their elegant, sleek design and for being perfect for the city setting. The spread-eagle grill became an icon for the brand.
The Lincoln range currently includes
2 sedans (MKZ and MKS),
2 crossovers (MKX and MKT),
1 SUV (Lincoln Navigator).
In 2013, the brand introduced Lincoln MCK, a compact crossover. By 2015, there will be 7 different cars and the company will extend to China. Lincoln will use the new MKZ as the image of its reinvented brand.
