Japan's Lexus and Its Pursuit of Perfection
In the 80's the Americans were leading the luxury cars market. The Japanese, however, were planning to put an end to their domination. Toyota Motor Corporation's luxury car division, Lexus, known to the United States in 1989, was soon recognized as one of the best sold premium cars, globally.
A Most costly Road to Perfection
The company's history is certainly interesting. Lexus started as the F1 project, a secret plan to develop the world's best luxury vehicle. The first of this kind was Lexus LS 400, which took considerable time and resources to create. The operational centers are located in California and Belgium. The Lexus experts have been observing closely the American lifestyle in order to know what would surely sell. To produce the first Lexus, the whole investment was of $1 billion and 24 engineer teams were involved, along with about 2000 employees. A total of 450 prototypes were created until the Lexus perfection was reached.
Design Uniqueness and Technological Improvement
Lexus had nothing in common with the already well known Toyota designs. Apart from its exterior, the cars were silent, reliable and ergonomic. Moreover, the models were also powerful. With the introduction of the Hybrid Drive system, the Lexus sales increased even more.
Constant Growth
In the 90's, Lexus not only reached the peak position for its sales in America, but also redesigned many of its models. While thousands of dealers were interested in the franchise, only a select batch of 121 were chosen. Lexus released the SC400 coupe and the ES 300 sedan in 1991 and later the LX 450, which represented the entry into the sport utility market segment. The letter one was based on Toyota's Land Cruiser 100. 50 countries already knew Lexus by 2007. Surprisingly, the home market in Japan saw it only in 2005. The current Lexus lineup is as follows:
IS Series
LS Series
RX Series
The LF-A avant-garde concept cars.
Recent Year Developments
In the past years, the company has been directing its efforts towards the hybrid vehicles segment. Thus, one year after its anniversary, Lexus launches the CT 200h, a premium compact hybrid. In 2011, the GS 350 shows the new look for Lexus. Within the same year, the world gets to know the GS 350 SPORT model, followed in 2012 by LF-LC, GS 450h, LS 460 F SPORT, ES 300h hybrid sedan and the LFA. The 3rd generation IS sport sedan premiers in 2013 and the 1st Lexus Design Award announces its winners, which has called for the innovators of the future.
