A Military and Commercial Success Story: Land Rover
The Land Rover car manufacturer is a British brand based in Warwickshire, UK. Its specialty is represented by the 4-wheel vehicles. It is now a subsidiary of India's Tata Motors, as part of the group Jaguar Land Rover. After Jeep, it is the second oldest of its kind.
From One Model to a Glorious Lineup
The first vehicle produced by the Rover Company was called 'Land Rover' and was produced in 1948. The idea was later developed to represent a whole range, which included:
Defender
Discovery
Freelander
Range Rover & Range Rover Sport
Range Rover Evoque.
Assemblage is completed at the Solihulll and Halewood plants.
A Late Founding
Even though the aforementioned models existed before 1978, the brand as it is was born only that year. Commercial success led to the separation of the land Land Rover line, which became a company on its own. British Aerospace was the new owner and later BMW acquired it (1994). From 2000 on, another owner sets in - the Ford Motor Company, which eventually left Land Rover to Tata Motors in 2008.
The WWI Jeep Influence
The original design was signed by Maurice Wilks. The prototype was built on Jeep chassis, which is actually where Wilks got his inspiration from. The axles were also from a Jeep. The classic Rover model can be distinguished through the familiar rectangular shape extensively used by the brand. That old model is still looked for on the used market. The original Range Rover designed by Spen King represented one of the best success stories for the British Motor Industry and had been produced until 1996. For this classic Range rover, the demand simply exceeded the supply.
The Aims for Land Rover
In 2010 Tata Motors informed that its Land Rovers and Jaguars would be built in China, cutting down the costs and aiming to expand the sales. The brand features concept vehicles too, as well as a series of models developed strictly for military use, most developed for the UK Ministry of Defense, but also for the Australian Army.
Latest Developments and Eco-Friendly Innovations
After the Land Rover Evoque was introduced in 2011, the 4th generation of Land Rover vehicles is displayed at the 2012 Paris Motor Show. The All-Terrain Electric Defender was unveiled in 2013, a vehicle producing no emissions, which can last up to 8 hours before it is recharged. The product's purpose is only for research so far.
