Designed and manufactured by Toyota Motor Corp, the Toyota Prius is a full hybrid electric mid-sized hatchback featuring a front engine and a front wheel drive layout. The first generation Prius (XW10) with a 4-door sedan body style was launched in the 1998 model year. Air conditioning and electric power steering comes as standard equipments with the XW10 and XW11.
The US EPA (CARB) marked the XW10 and XW11 with an air pollution score of 3 out of 10 as an Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV). The second generation Prius (XW20), classified as SULEV (Super Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle), is even more environmentally friendly and is 6 inches (150 mm) longer than the previous Prius models. The XW20 uses an all-electric A/C compressor coupled with a smaller and lighter NiMH battery. Debuted in the model year 2010, the latest Prius XW30 is a 5-door liftback which features an The 1.8-liter gasoline engine that generates a maximum power of 134 hp (100 kW).
