The GMC Typhoon Ruled The Roads Back In Its Day. Can It Still Claim To Be Able To Do It Today
Surprisingly, even old cars are to be put to a good use today. Even though the production of cars has seen a major evolution since the 90s, there are still quite a few models which can be put to good use today as well. Naturally, one could not expect a car which has been made in the year 1991 to perform spectacularly well, but for a nostalgic driver looking for a car with a great price and decent performance, the GMC Typhoon might just be up their alley. Considering how old this car actually is, it is actually a relic among cars, and that is still capable of providing the drivers today with a pleasant experience.
What should I know about this car?
The GMC Typhoon came as an upgrade to the previous series, the GMC Jimmy. Much like the model it came after, the GMC Typhoon has inherited most of the exterior design features from the model, but the creator said that this time they would like to create a sports car which will also be an SUV. Whether or not there was successful in that attempt can be easily portrayed by the fact that this car has been able to outrun the Ferrari 348, which is a pretty amazing feature by itself. With this being the creators had in mind to give to this car, the car has adopted the name of Typhoon, to hint that the car is able to reach the speed of wind. Today, it could at best, reach the speed of a light summer breeze, and it certainly won’t be able to compete with what today’s cars have in store. After two models, in the year 1993, this series has been brought to an end.
Would there be a chance I could upgrade it?
Shockingly, the GMC Typhoon has only three optional upgrades available. Those are the roof rack, the audio system and the anti theft system. Only three upgrades to apply to your car is a devastatingly bad characteristic, as this means you won’t be able to customize the car any way you want, furthermore, you will be limited to only most of the basic upgrades which won’t even affect the car’s performance at all. These upgrades may be applied to simply raise the level of convenience of the car, but nothing much can be expected. This is a very bad start; it doesn’t look like it is going to be any better down the road.
What kind of an engine will I find?
The engine of the GMC Typhoon is, as expected, by today’s standards, mediocre. It is a 4.3L V6 engine with 285 HP, connected to four-speed automatic transmission. Since no upgrades can be purchased for either the engine or transmission, you won’t be able to see this car go very fast. Granted, it will be decent in speed, but it will never be able to outrun any of the newer models. Considering the fact that this car is almost over 20 years old now, right from the start, we didn’t really expect much out of this to begin with. With that in mind, the engine is not a complete disappointment, but if you compare it to any of the newer models today, you will easily find a lot of reasons to be disappointed indeed.
What are the general fuel tank size and the fuel economy?
GMC Typhoon doesn’t particularly excel at fuel economy either. The main reason behind this is because the fuel tank capacity is extremely low for an SUV. It is going to be able to hold 20 gallons of fuel, and when barreling down the road it will be able to travel at 17mpg. This means that you will be able to travel at full speed for 340 miles before you completely run out of gas. This is impressive, but it the fuel tank could hold up several more gallons, this car could have gotten a much better rating.
What can expect in terms of safety?
Based on the safety test reviews, the GMC Typhoon didn’t seem to fare as well as it was supposed to, with particularly bad results in both of the driver’s safety and passenger safety areas. One would certainly expect that, if a car had a safety test and hasn’t come back as overly pleasing, it would only be fitting to ensure that enough safety features have been added to support the lack of the overall safety. However, this SUV doesn’t seem to have almost any safety features available. Not even the airbags. The only thing which can be offered in terms of safety is the four-wheel ABS, and fog lights. That’s it, nothing else will be able to prevent or protect you if an accident should occur. Other features which don’t affect the active safety are the power door locks and power windows. This is in no way a proper care for the safety which every car deserves, and this really allows you to see that this car has seen its days a long time ago.
Would it be a good idea to buy this car?
Most of the users were still purchasing this car to this day, have been able to say quite a few good things about it, despite the obvious disadvantages it clearly has, the GMC Typhoon can be a good choice of a car. But considering how much negative traits it has, it would be much more recommended to actually look for the available alternatives of all sorts before you turn towards this car with the intent of buying it. The reason behind this is simple: For the same or a slightly higher price you will be able to get your hands a much better car which will have all of the issues this car had successfully resolved. This car has been very popular and demanded back when it was created, and there is no doubt that it made an amazing choice back then. It simply got outdated now, and while it still can be used to casually drive around, it is really hard to recommend it as a purchase, seeing as some of the most crucial features are not exactly at the highest peak. If you are planning to get this car, regardless of what the reviews say, at least make sure you get the newest model.
