Ford C-Max Energi information: |
Introduction
Boasting a roomy cabin, confident handling and brisk acceleration, the Ford C-Max Energi builds on the likeable characteristic of the C-Max and evolves into a plug-in hybrid. The great efficiency and distinguished styling of this small activity vehicle has seen it become the awesome alternative to similar offerings from Chevrolet and Toyota. It takes over from where the Ford Escape Hybrid left off, and furthers Ford’s ambitions in the hybrid-only market.
What’s New for 2014?
For 2014 the C-Max Energi comes with a 2.0L Atkinson Cycle four-cylinder gasoline engine and a 7.6kw lithium-ion rechargeable battery pack. Together, the system generates about 195bhp. In all electric mode, or EV mode, the plug-in hybrid has a range of about 20 miles and a top speed of 85mph. Even without any assistance from the engine, the car is still able to display such characteristics as quick and quiet acceleration.
It is able to acquire a full charge in just two and a half hours with a 240 volt charger. A 120 volt charger increases that time to seven hours, or a typical night. As the C-Max Energi is all about efficiency, it reuses most of the braking energy through a regenerative braking system.
Models and Features
The C-Max is built on a wagon-like platform and has a five-door configuration. It is characteristically tall which translates to a more ample interior capable of carrying four passengers in roomy comfort. The exterior styling is reminiscent of Ford’s current design signature with its Aston-like front grille, sloping roofline, a raked windshield and long flowing headlights. The large windows increase visibility while the relatively high driver’s seat position lets you feel in command of the road.
The Energi is a member of the hugely successful C-Max line but the only one to offer plug-in capabilities. There is a conventional hybrid available.
The cabin of the car is highly likeable. While it does offer as much space for passengers as is possible, cargo space is not as abundant. It is a trade-off but one that is readily forgivable seeing that the battery pack eats up some of that cargo space.
Some of the standard features to expect include dual-zone automatic climate control, Bluetooth, a USB port, a110-volt power outlet, rear parking sensors, satellite radio and a six-speaker system. Ford’s state of the art MyFord Touch infotainment system is included as well. It comes with SYNC, a voice-activated feature that lets you keep your eyes on the road and your hands on the steering. It allows you to do simple tasks such as answering a call through a simple voice command. Steering-wheel mounted controls make it easy to access some of the more useful features of the car.
Next-Generation SmartGauge with EcoGuide greatly improves the driving experience. The dual LCD displays provides all the pertinent information concerning the plug-in hyrid. Besides displaying fuel economy figures, economy history, miles to empty and other trip data, it also gives tutorials on how to improve energy efficiency and brake better. A nifty design feature is the simulation of leaves growing when you are driving efficiently.
Options and Packages
The standard model tries to provide as many features as possible, many of them concerning safety. However, in a bid to keep the price of the C-Max Energi within reach for those with limited budgets, most of the premium features are excluded.
If you find the additional cost easy to meet, you can opt for the higher end offering that comes with a powered lift-gate, heated seats, navigation and park assist. This last feature takes the hustle out of parallel parking by taking charge of the steering wheel and guiding the car into a tight spot. There’s also a panoramic option, but that is an option by itself.
Under the Hood
The plug-in hybrid powertrain is the highlight of the Energi. The four-cylinder engine is capable, and is complemented by an electric motor pack that increases its total output. It starts out in EV mode, and after depleting the 20 mile range, operates like a standard hybrid using the motor only when it is necessary.
The ride is pleasingly smooth and quiet. It accelerates quickly and the ride is very comfortable. On the highway, the EV mode doesn’t churn out enough pulling power and feels like it is struggling. But this is hardly an issue.
Fuel Economy
The Ford C-Max Energi, since its debut, has been thought as the worthy challenger to the title that the Prius dominated. It has a combined EPA mileage rating of 100mpg and a total range of 550 miles. In conventional hybrid mode, the efficiency is 43mpg. Impressive, perhaps, but it is really the all-electricity driving range that is really wowing. Combined with its fun-driving experience, better style and higher levels of comfort, it is a worthy contender to the title of the best fuel-efficient car to buy.
Safety Ratings and Technology
The Energi is bundled with a variety of safety features including traction control, integrated turn signal mirrors, four-wheel ABS and brake assist. Both the drivers and passengers get airbags (including side airbags for the latter). The safety ratings are high, earning five stars for side crash tests and four stars overall.
The Ford C-Max Energi is in a word, great. It is more expensive than other cars in its class, but offsets this with its better ride quality and performance. Its tall wagon body profile means adults are spoilt to ample leg and head room. Cargo space is minimal, but can be increased by folding down the rear seats.
It is not without its flaws. The pricing is one it’s biggest. The other is the infotainment system which takes a little getting used to. The rear seats don’t fold all the way down, due to the large battery pack, and this might sacrifice practicality when you need to carry awkward objects.
All in all, the C-Max Energi is the most fun to drive in its class. If you are willing to dig a little deeper for the premium version, you’ll be treated one of the best plug-in cars currently available.
