Chevrolet S-10 is a type of compact pickup truck produced by an American automobile manufacturer, General Motors, since 1982. The production of this model for the North American market was ended in 2004, and it was later replaced by the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon model. However, the production of this model is still going on until today in 2014 for the Brazilian market. It was intended to be the successor of Chevrolet LUV. It has the basic front-engine rear-wheel drive and front-engine four-wheel drive layout.
During its production period, the company has produced three generations of Chevrolet S-10. The first generation was produced in 1982-1993. The second generation was produced in 1994-2004. The third generation was produced since 2012 until today in 2014.
Under The Hood
- The first generation of Chevrolet S-10, also called GMC S-15 and GMC Sonoma, was produced in 1982-1993. It was assembled in Ohio, Lousiana, and Michigan. It was built based on the GMT325 platform.
The first generation features 1.9 liters LR1 inline-four gasoline engine, 2.0 liters LQ2 inline-four gasoline engine, 2.2 liters LQ7 inline-four diesel engine, 2.5 liters L38 inline-four gasoline engine, 2.5 liters LN8 inline-four gasoline engine, 2.8 liters LR2 V6 gasoline engine, 2.8 liters LL2 V6 gasoline engine, 4.3 liters L35 V6 gasoline engine, and 4.3 liters LB9 V6 gasoline engine.
It uses 3-speed THM200C automatic, 4-speed Isuzu S101 manual, 4-speed Borg-Warner T4 manual engine, 4-speed 700 R4 automatic, 4-speed 4L60 automatic, 4-speed 4T60E automatic, 5-speed Getrag 290 manual, 5-speed 5LM60 manual, 5-speed NV3500 manual, and 5-speed Borg Warner T5 manual transmission system. It has 108-122 inches wheelbase.
- The second generation of Chevrolet S-10, also known as GMC Sonoma, Isuzu Hombre, and Chevrolet Xtreme, was produced in 1994-2004. It was assembled in United States and Brazil. It was built based on the GMT325 platform.
The second generation features 2.2 liters inline-four engine and 4.3 liters V6 engine. It uses 4-speed 4L60E automatic, 5-speed Borg Warner T-5 manual, 5-speed NV1500 manual, and 5-speed NV3500 transmission system. It has 108-122 inches wheelbase, with 190-205 inches length, 67 inches width, and 63 inches height.
- The third generation of Chevrolet S-10 was only available for the Brazilian market, and it was produced since 2012 until today in 2014. It features 2.4 liters Flexfuel engine and 2.8 liters Duramax diesel engine.

The new 2014 version of Chevrolet S-10 has 7 available colors: white summit, carbon flash, grey aztec, cyclone grey, switchblade silver, grey evenstar, and green deepwood.
Models and Features
The 2014 version of Chevrolet S-10 has 8 different variants, namely the LS 2.4 4x2, LS 2.8 4x4, 2.4 LT 4x2, 2.8 LT 4x2, 2.8 LT 4x4, 2.4 LTZ 4x2, 2.8 LTZ 4x2, and 2.8 LTZ 4x4.
- The LS 2.4 4x2 variant features 2.4 liters FlexPower engine with 5-speed manual transmission system, power steering, ABS brakes, air conditioning system, limited slip differential, and navigation system. It is available in Single and Double Cab version.
- The LS 2.8 4x4 variant features 2.8 liters turbo diesel engine capable of producing 200 horsepower, with 6-speed manual transmission sytem, power steering, ABS brakes, limited slip differential, air conditioning system, and navigation system. It is available in Single and Double Cab version.
- The 2.4 LT 4x2 variant includes all the features available in the LS version, with additional features such as electric windows, switchblade key, height adjustment steering column, anti-theft alarm, fog lamps, 16 inches aluminium wheels, 5-speed manual transmission, and 2.4 liters FlexPower engine.
- The 2.8 LT 4x2 variant includes all the features available in the LS version, with additional features such as electric windows, switchblade key, height adjustment steering column, anti-theft alarm, fog lamps, 16 inches aluminium wheels, 2.8 liters engine capable of producing 200 horsepower, and 6-speed manual transmission system.
- The 2.8 LT 4x4 variant includes all the features available in the LS version, with additional features such as electric windows, switchblade key, steering column with height adjustment, anti-theft alarm, fog lamps, 16 inches aluminium wheels, 2.8 liters turbo diesel engine capable of producing 200 horsepower, and 6-speed manual system.
- The 2.4 LTZ 4x2 variant includes all the features available in the LT version, with additional features such as leather trim, electronic climate control, electrically-adjustable driver seat, auto pilot, radio, MP3, Bluetooth, mini USB input, 19 inches aluminium wheels, LED taillights, side running boards, roof rack, 2.4 liters FlexPower engine, 5-speed manual transmission. It is available in Double Cap version.
- The 2.8 LTZ 4x2 variant inlcudes all the features available in the LT version, with additional features such as leather trim, air conditioning with electric climate control, auto pilot, driver seat with electric adjustment, CD player, radio, MP3, mini USB port, Bluetooth technology, 17 inches aluminium wheels, LED taillights, side running boards, roof rack, 2.8 liters turbo diesel engine, and manual or automatic transmission. It is available in Double Cap version.
- The 2.8 LTZ 4x4 variant includes all the features available in the LT version, with additional features such as leather trim, air conditioning system, electric adjustment driver seat, auto pilot, radio with MP3 and CD player, Bluetooth and USB, 17 inches aluminium wheels, LED taillights, side running boards, roof rack, 2.8 liters turbodiesel engine, and 6-speed automatic transmission system. It is available in Double Cap version.
Fuel Economy
Chevrolet S-10 has 23 miles per gallon fuel economy for city driving and 29 miles per gallon fuel economy for highway driving.
Safety Rating and Technology
There are various safety features available in Chevrolet S-10, such as anti-theft alarm, support strap, bars side impact protecion doors, inflatable air bags, safety belts, fire extinguisher, disk and drum brakes with ABS, front tow hook, immobilizer, toolkit, brake light, lighthouse front fog, rear fog light, electronic halogen headlights, limited slip differential, back cover with key, and power locks with remote control key.
According to the International Institute of Highway Safety, the Chevrolet S10 received MARGINAL rating for the overall safety, with MARGINAL rating for structure safety, GOOD rating for head/neck safety, GOOD rating for chest safety, ACCEPTABLE rating for left/right foot safety, and POOR rating for restraints safety.
