Chevrolet Blazer, also known as Chevrolet S-10 Blazer, is a type of compact and mid-size SUV produced by an American automobile manufacturer, General Motors, since 1983. The production of this model was ended in 2005, and it was later replaced by GMC Envoy, Chevrolet TrailBlazer, Chevrolet Equinox, and Chevrolet Captiva.
During its production period, the company has released two generations of Chevrolet Blazer, namely: the first generation which was produced from 1983 to 1994, and the second generation which was produced from 1994-2005. It uses three different layouts: front-engine rear-wheel drive, front-engine four-wheel drive, and front-engine all-wheel drive layout.
There are two different body styles available for this model: the 2-door and 4-door body style. However, the latest Blazer model, which was produced in 2004-2005, was offered only as a 2-door SUV model.
Models and Features
The company has released two generations of Chevrolet Blazer in its production years.
The first generation of Chevrolet Blazer, also known as GMC S-15 Jimmy and GMC Jimmy, was produced in 1983-1994. It was assembled in New Jersey, Louisiana, Michigan, Ohio, and Venezuela. It has 2-door SUV and 4-door SUV body style, and it was built around the GM GMT330 platform.
The two door SUV version has 100 inches wheelbase, with 170 inches length, 65 inches width, and 64 inches height. The four door SUV version has 107 inches wheelbase, 176 inches length, 65 inches width, and 64 inches height.
The second generation of Chevrolet Blazer, also known as GMC Jimmy and Opel Blazer, was produced in 1994-2005. It was assembled in New Jersey, Louisiana, Ohio, Brazil, Venezuela, Indonesia, and Russia. It has 2-door SUV and 4-door SUV body style, and it was built around the same GM GMT330 platform.
The two door SUV version has 174-177 inches length, 67 inches width, and 64-67 inches height. The four door SUV version has 181-188 inches length, 67 inches width, and 64-67 inches height.
Options and Packages
Chevrolet Blazer is available in two different models: the first generation model and the second generation model.
The first generation model has been around since 1983, and it consists of the model years from 1984-1995. The second generation model was released in 1994-2005, and it consists of the model years from 1995-2005.
Each year, the company made several improvements and adjustments for each model. Here are some features that are available in the first and second generation models of Chevrolet Blazer:
1. The 1984-1995 version of Chevrolet Blazer features 5.7 liters V8 engine capable of producing 210 horsepower and 300 torque. It has 5-speed manual transmission system (with overdrive) as its standard transmission system, as well as 4-speed automatic transmission system (with overdrive) as its optional transmission. The maximum number of seats available is 6. This version also features ABS brakes and driver airbags.
2. The 1996-2005 version of Chevrolet Blazer features 4.3 liters V6 engine capable of produdcing 190 horsepower at 4400 rotation per minute and 339 Nm torque at 2800 rotation per minute. It has auxiliary air cooler as well as auxiliary transmission cooler. It also has four-wheel ABS and four-disc brakes as its braking system. For the exterior design, this model features heat reflective glass, rear platform step, hinge rear window, and tinted glass.
Under the Hood
The first generation of Chevrolet Blazer was built based on the GM GMT330 platform. It features 8 different types of engine: namely 1.9 liters Isuzu inline-four engine, 2.0 liters OHV inline-four engine, 2.2 liters Diesel inline-four engine, 2.2 liters L43 inline-four engine, 2.5 liters Iron Duke inline-four engine, 2.8 liters LR2 V6 engine, 2.8 liters LL2 V6 engine, and 4.3 liters 4300 V6 engine. It uses two different transmission systems, namely the 700R4/4L60 transmission and 4L60E transmission. The engine is capable of producing 83-173 horsepower.
The second generation of Chevrolet Blazer was built based on the same GM GMT330 platform. It features two different types of engine, namely 4.3 liters Vortec 4300 V6 engine and 2.2 liters GM Family II L4 engine. For the transmission system, it uses 4-speed 4L60E automatic and 5-speed manual transmission system. The engine is capable of producing 138-195 horsepower and 195-339 Nm torque.
Fuel Economy
The Chevrolet Blazer model uses unleaded fuel 87 as its main power source. It uses multi-point fuel injection system.
The first generation of Chevrolet Blazer has 12-13 miles per gallon fuel economy for city driving, as well as 16 miles per gallon fuel economy for highway driving. The second generation of Chevrolet Blazer has 16 miles per gallon for city driving, as well as 22 miles per gallon for highway driving.
Safety Rating and Technology
The latest 2005 Chevrolet Blazer has several safety features and technologies embedded in the body of the vehicle, such as daytime running light, 4-wheel ABS, child seat lower anchorage, rear adjustable upper belt, energy management feature, rear seat head restraint, and trunk release.
For the crash rating test, the 2005 Chevrolet Blazer has 3-star safety rating for the frontal impact on the driver side as well as 4-star safety rating for the frontal impact on the passenger side. It has 5-star rating for the side impact on front and rear occupants, as well as 5-star rating on the rollover resistance crash test.
Trivia
- The company replaced the engine on the first generation model with the 1.9 liters gasoline engine built by Isuzu in accordance with the new emission law.
- The second generation of Chevrolet Blazer with GM Family II engine was available only for the Indonesian market.
- The second generation of Chevrolet Blazer was still being produced in Brazil until the year 2012, when the company completely discontinued the production of this model.
- There was also another Blazer model released by the company, which is a full-size SUV model called K5 Blazer, which was produced until 1991. The K5 Blazer was known as the smallest full-size SUV produced by General Motors.
- The company subsequently released the new Blazer model, called the TrailBlazer, to replace the discontinued Blazer model. The TrailBlazer is still being in production until today in 2014, along with another SUV model produced by the company called Chevrolet Tahoe.
