Volkswagen is a German automobile manufacturer with headquarters in Wolfsburg, Lower Saxony. This is the original brand of the Volkswagen Group and the largest automobile manufacturer in Germany. The company is also the third largest automobile manufacturers in the world. Volkswagen has the distinction of having three of its cars in the top ten all time best selling cars. 

The company is also the most in the investment on automobile research and development. Volkswagen in German means “People’s Car and the Volkswagen brand of vehicles are currently riding on the slogan Das Auto, meaning “The Car”. The parent company is Volkswagen group and it produces a luxury line of cars for the customers. Volkswagen had a production output of 5,771,789 units in 2012 and had earned a profit of €3.64 billion as of 2012.

The company was founded by the Nazi Trade union in 1937 and over the decades it came up with several models of cars including the Volkswagen Sedan with Split rear window in 1949, Volkswagen Cabriolet in 1953, Volkswagen Type 2 and 1300 Deluxe Circa in 1966. During 1961-73 Volkswagen expanded its production line and started manufacturing Type 3 models and larger Type 4 vehicles. 1973 to 1977 the Volkswagen Passat was introduced after the failure of the beetle model cars. In 1975 Volkswagen Polo was unveiled which was later rebadged as the Audi 50. 1974 to 90 the world saw Volkswagen entering into the mainstream and the Polo became well liked in the UK. A hatchback and a coupe were launched in 1981 and when it was face lifted in 1990 it was the best selling Volkswagen car till it was replaced by a 4th generation Polo.

Volkswagen achieved success in North America with Golf and Jetta, the third generation vehicles and the company enhanced its marketing campaign with bicycle racks mounted on the Jetta Sedan 1996 model. The new Beetle and a fifth generation Passant boosted the brand name further. During 1998 sales of Volkswagen cars mounted and the Volkswagen Golf was the 12th most sought after car in Britain amounting to a sale of 50,000 units.

After 2000 Volkswagen under its expansion program unleashed several new models of cars and the sixth generation Golf was introduced in 2008. And the brand gave birth to several cousins that included VW Jetta, Sdoda Octavia, Audi a3, VW Scirocco, Seat Leon, Seat Toledo, the new Seat Altea and Mini-MPV. Volkswagen also earned the most fuel-efficient car title with its Volkswagen XL1 at 261 mpg. Volkswagen Polo also won the 2010 award for the world car of the year. With 4 world car awards Volkswagen reign as top auto manufacturers with most world car awards.

The company has a worldwide presence and has operations in countries like Mexico, Slovakia, India, China, Malaysia, Indonesia, Brazil, Portugal, Spain, Argentina, South Africa, Bosnia, Czech Republic and Herzegovina. A new plant has been started in Chattanooga, Tennessee, US in 2011 and Volkswagen figured in the top 25 conglomerates of the world. The current models of VW cars include the Golf, Jetta, Passat, Scirocco and Tiguan and these are hugely popular models in the world.
