Rating the 2016 Explorer whether it is good is a useless exercise because it is good and has the backing of history. It has been a juggernaut that was unstoppable since its introduction and potentially ignited the SUV explosion in the market. Basically derived from the Ranger compact pickup it proved very popular though compromised in dynamics, the 2016 model comes with significant updates. 

When the crossovers with car traits picked up buyer interest, the sales for Explorer declined but the 2011 model of Ford Explorer resurrected the sale fortune. Irrespective of increasing competition Explorer kept surging ahead in sales each of the five years and became the most popular American SUV with three rows. The 2016 Explorer is not a complete redesign, but important updates have been imparted to the model. New front and back styling has been added, and some new equipment along with the introduction of a new trim with top spec. The most important mechanical change has come from the new four-cylinder EcoBoost engine.

The question that arises now is whether the four-banger is sufficient? The previous 2.0 Liter engine has now been replaced with a 2.3 Liter EcoBoost which was an option with extra cost over the regular 3.5 Liter V-6. But the take rate was miserable with two to four percent. Why it should be otherwise to Ford this time? There are numerous reasons, first the 280hp power of the 2.3 Liter EcoBoost and 310 ponds torque is excess by 40hp and 40 pounds respectively in comparison with smaller EcoBoost. Secondly the 2.3 Liter can be paired with front-wheel-drive as well as the all-wheel. Last and the important reason is the 2.3 can two up to three thousand pounds where is towing is not recommended for the 2.0 Liter.

We drove both versions of the 2.3 Liter EcoBoost four, and found to be capable of towing the bulk of the Explorer.  Acceleration at slower speed is lukewarm but once you cross the 30mph mark, it Explorer runs smoothly without posing any passing problems on highway. When you are flogging it, it sounds irritated, but does not alter character of the calm Explorer.

Another question that you may ask is whether consumers are inclined to pay the extra $995 for the EcoBoost four-cylinder with higher fuel-economy against the V-6 naturally aspirated engine. In the Limited and base XLT models the V-6 is the standard engine, and it offers 290hp and 255 lb-ft torque. The turbo four with its forward wheel drive economy of 19/28 for city and highway and the all-wheel drive's 18/26mpg conveniently beats the fuel economy of the V-6 by 2mpg in city and 4mpg on highway with the front drive and the figure changes to 2 and 3 with AWD.

The base Explorer costs $31,595 and the XLT $34,295 followed by Limited at $42,195. The Sport trim costs $44,195 and the top-end Platinum, a $53,495. The SUV can carry six to seven passengers and is offered in the body style of a 4-door hatchback. Top speed for Explorer is 110mph to 120mph.
