The first car of Suzuki that made its mark in the Indian market as a small family car was M800. It is still available in most of the country. It’s been on offer in the Indian market for last 28 years now. (1984 to 2012). Since then, the company has sold more the 2.5 million units. There has been one major update in 1986 and a lot of minor changes in it as and when it was needed, since then. Though the car is not available in the metro cities now, due to unavailability of BSIV engine, it is still available in the rural areas. It is sold in meager numbers there.

Since May, there have been rumors that Maruti has stopped the production of M800, but the company always denies this. The next important car of the company in this family is Alto. The success graph of Alto is even greatly steeper than M800. The car’s been holding the best seller title for about over a decade now!

However, with the increase in petrol prices and the availability of so many options in the market, for eg., Hyundai Eon, Maruti is losing its grip on the market on this segment. The rising competition is making it even more difficult day by day. The solution, however, was disclosed at the 2012 Auto Expo, in the absence of many details. MSI MD, Nakanishi, accepted that the company was seeing a new car which will replace M800 and Alto in India! It will have an up-to-date styling and technology. For quite some time, it was believed that Cervo was going to be the new Maruti Small Car for India. But from some genuine sources, it was disclosed that the new car is called the Alto 800, and it is expected to be launched in India in the coming festive season.
