The 2015 model Volvo S60 Polestar costs $60, 225 and people might wonder why this normal looking mid-size Volvo with half the power of the Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat with the similar price is measured in equal footing.  One must drive this 345-hp turbocharged inline-six, with a Haldex all-wheel-drive system to understand why it is so highly priced.   

The S60 Polestar sports giant Michelin Pilot Super Sports tires sized 245/35-20, and it has rear torque bias and we are not entirely opposing the above theory. A Polestar is no match for the Hellcat in anyway, as the Volvo is made for professors wearing herringbone jacket and the other with 707 horsepower which the American citizen consider as a god given right who owns the cat. The Volvo Polestar is going to be rare spices as only 40 sedans are built, and the one we are reviewing is the 38th. We have latched our test gear to this one, and we are about to embark on dissecting it.

The Volvo has 20 more horses than the normal S60 R-Design and the ECU tune by Polestar is optional, but the full-fledged S60 Polestar is hellishly faster nonetheless. We did 4.5 seconds doing the 0-60mph  run which is 0.8 faster timing the last S60-R design we drove which was a 2012 model before a refresh. The Polestar carries a substantial top speed of 159 mph whereas the R-Design possessed just 134. The giant Brembo brakes with six-piston clips are very effective in bringing the vehicle to a halt as it notches up a 149-foot stop speeding from 70-0mph. This figure is far better than the dismal 175-foot done by the R-Design and the 193-foot stop of the 2015 S60 T6 Drive-E.

We have more bits of useful information:  manually adjustable Öhlins dampers, 80% more rigid springs than the R-design, new suspension bushings and extra spoilers and wings are the new addition for Polestar. The car further adds a gaggle of Polestar badges and wears Rebel Blue paint. All these additions make sure that the Swedish vehicle offers 0.91g grip on a skidpad.  Ride motions can be abrupt in the Michigan excuses that we call roads but the Öhlins dampers cycles rapidly and ride through quick and large impacts.

This Polestar S60 is not inclined towards the track when our driver tried he experienced brake fade but is highly suitable for fast cruising on open roads. You feel grip everywhere, and mild understeer takes over when you overcook a turn till you tread on the gas pedal. The electronically controlled clutch pack of the Haldex all-wheel-drive system channels the power to the rear axle and freezes the front-end thus driving the Polestar through the corner. The steering is more than a willing partner in the whole process.

S60 Polestar can seat five passengers, and it has four doors. The sedan is designed with front engine layout and is driven by four-wheel-drive. The inline-six engine produces 345 horses and 369 pounds of thrust and achieves a maximum speed of 159mph.18/27mpg is the EPA  rating for fuel economy and in our test drive we found 18mpg overall.
