The so called silly “four-door-coupe” was invented by Mercedes Benz when it introduced CLS550 in 2005 in the Unites States. For BMW and Audi took some time to catch up with that, but the phenomenon of a no so functional four-door has spread to even SUV segments. Mercedes was peeved when the Audi A7 with more power relegated its CLS of second generation to the second place.

Earlier the CLS550 was endowed with a V-8 that gave a clear advantage over its rival with a straight-line performance and the Audi had a supercharged V-6 to answer to that. However the CLS lost too many scores as it was fuel-thirsty, congested and unbelievably expensive. Then  Mercedes-Benz decided to release a lower end model for 2015 and replaced the V-8 with a twin turbocharged V-6 and the move was targeted solely at Audi and also the 640i Gran Coupe of BMW with six-cylinders.

For the new model it reduced the price, offered less power and of course improved on the fuel economy over the CLS550. The CLS400 also shared its facelifted body with other models of 2015 along with the redesigned interior. It also uses the regular seven-speed automatic gearbox while the CLS550 has been offered with a nine-speed automatic. This model also was given the 4MATIC all-wheel-drive to make the reference to Audi easier.

As we had presumed, the 3.0 Liter six-cylinder turbocharged engine neither accelerates nor sounds like the V-8 with forced induction. From a standstill, this model reached the 0-60mph mark in 5.1 seconds which is slower by a second to the CLS550 in comparison test but it matches the timing of Audi crucially.  By the Ingolstadt has not been lethargic either and we had already experienced the A7 of 2017 with 330-hp of power rating which 20-horses more than previous year model.

This 4MATIC weighing 4264 pounds is heavier over the V-8 which lost the comparison test, by 100 pounds and it has rear-wheel-drive. The new model has its brakes and handling improved significantly.  It also carries the 19-inch wheel option with Continental summer tires and worth $500 and the air-suspension costing $1610.  What we found was improvement in the gripping, and it has gained 0.05g at 0.94g over the rear-wheel-drive model. The car stopped at 153 feet from 70-0mph which is a total 10-foot short.

During out test drive we also found the car offering 20mpg which incidentally beat the EPA rating, but his may not be a buying point for the moneyed customers acquiring luxury cars and the lower fuel prices also substantiate this opinion. These data appear better than the Audi of 2011 we tested, so we are eagerly waiting to take 2017 A7 to the track and see how it fares against these figures.

 2015 Mercedes-Benz CLS400 4MATIC is offered in 4-door sedan bodystyle while it is able to seat four passengers in its fold. It is designed with front-engine layout and is run by four-wheel-drive. The base price of the 2015 model is $69,415, and the tested example carried a price tag of $86, 280.
