Mercedes-Benz R-Class information:

Mercedes R classMercedes R class

Mercedes-Benz R-Class vehicle is a luxury class large minivan or a crossover utility vehicle. It was first revealed in 2005; first it was considered as “Sports Cruiser” by Mercedes-Benz and only later as “Family Tourer”. There are two different body styles offered, first one is a five door wagon and the second one is a crossover utility vehicle. Four types of different engines are offered 3.0L V6 engine, 3.5L V6 engine, 5.0L V8 engine and 6.2L V8 engine. In addition to that, there is also an AMG version of the R-Class vehicle made the so called “R63 AMG”, which was introduced in 2006. It’s based on the same vehicle that R-Class was built on – Mercedes Benz W251. It has a custom and hand built 6.2 liter V8 engine with 503 horsepower and 375 kilo Watts. It could reach 100 kilometers per hour in just less than 5 seconds! Its top speed can be around 250 kilometers per hour.

Models

The main R-Class model is Mercedes-Benz W251, that was introduced in 2005 and whose production began in 2006. It was actually the first minivan produced by the Germans, except maybe for the Mercedes-Benz Vito, who’s used for commercial purposes rather than serving the needs of families and individuals alone. Mercedes-Benz R-Class price range was between the M-Class and GL-Class vehicles, so the price wasn’t the lowest one, it was considered to be rather expensive one compared to what other companies had to offer. It’s a practical vehicle with four wheel drive, with a very long wheelbase it is: 2980 millimeters and 3215 millimeters length, therefore it was being manufactured with three seated rows, so there are six seats inside the vehicle. It has seven speed automatic gearbox. Even though its coachwork looks like it’s a luxurious sedan, but it can also offer much more room inside the vehicle. There’s a lot of technology implemented into the Mercedes-Benz W251, for example: COMAND infotainment system, leather seats, climate control, Bluetooth and so on, but it’s very easy to manage it. The vehicle is very quiet as well, especially the ones that are equipped with the diesel engine, as it reduces the volume of the engine to bare minimum. Mercedes-Benz R-class is a heavy vehicle, however, it affects the driving in a positive way, allows gives you the feeling like you’re driving a limo along with the feeling of total control of the car. The sound isolation in the vehicle is also very good. The only negative aspect might be its size and bulkiness it might be difficult at times to control this vehicle while driving in town. Especially the parking can be difficult with this vehicle, however, newer models have rear cameras put in to reduce the difficulties as little as possible. Mercedes-Benz R-Class never lived up to its expectation so the production was cancelled in 2013. There was also an AMG version of the Mercedes-Benz W251 that was produced from 2006 to 2007. It had a hand build engine, however like the regular W251, its success was short lived and shortly after they were cancelled.

Design

Mercedes-Benz offers a very elegant and exciting exterior of the vehicle, which is well combined with luxurious and sport looks. As mentioned before it has a lot of space inside the vehicle, even tall people will not feel uncomfortable while sitting in the third row in the back, there’s plenty of room for everyone regardless of their body weight or body height. If you are not using the two seats in the last row of the vehicle, you can easily fold them down and instead have a large trunk, which can hold up to 900 liter of mass. The vehicle is also a mixture between a sedan and an SUV, so it offers you the speed of a sedan and the versatility of a SUV.

Success

Even though Mercedes-Benz expected their R-Class to be a successful one, it wasn’t. Only over 4000 cars were sold in the US in 2005, when the manufacturers expected to sell 50,000 cars world-wide. The main reason for such a poor success was that the marketing campaign was very unsuccessful and it had very poor fuel efficiency, which forced customers to look for other options. Mercedes-Benz started selling R-Class vehicles world-wide in 2005 and after such a bad sale records their decided to stop producing the vehicles in 2013.

Safety

Mercedes-Benz R Class scored very well in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) front crash test. Even though it was only marked as acceptable during a side-crash for the R-Class models made between September 2008 and 2009, because upon further inspection it was revealed that the dummy used in the car crashed faced too much weight, but Mercedes-Benz were quick to fix their mistake and they changed the seatbelts so the excessive load would be reduced. After the addition tests, the newer Mercedes-Benz R-Class was given a “Good” mark for the vehicle. After receiving so high in its overall, the car was awarded with “Top Safety Pick” award. The vehicle was also tested by another organization called “Tatcham’s New Car Whiplash Ratings” (NCWR), who tested the vehicle, how good it car protect its occupants from whiplash injuries, which happen when the vehicle is hit in the back and it forces the occupants to move their heads up front and then back, such injuries mainly affect the neck area. The NCWR gave a “Good” overall rating to Mercedes-Benz R-Class. Also the vehicle has implmemented whole wheel transmission, electronically controlled 4ETS system, that lets the driver feel safety no matter what are the conditions. The vehicle also offers 12 airbags, so the protection of the occupants is a high as possible. Also, the vehicle has PRE-Safe and POST-Safe technology implemented, which make sure you always feel comfortable when you get ready to take a ride and in an event of an accident, POST-Safe ensures the safety of the occupants, by shutting the engine off, unlocking the doors and so on. Overall, Mercedes Benz R-Class is a very safe vehicle, equipped with the newest technology to ensure the safety of its occupants.
