Mercedes Benz 300 Series
Mercedes Benz 300 comes popularly in 3 series i.e. W186, W188 and W189. These three models gained lot of fame and prestige during the 1950’s. The design and look of the S-class that was later launched by Mercedes Benz is quite similar to the 300 cars. It was also really strong and high end series of cars. The Mercedes Benz 300 were produced in two variants , a 4 door tourer comparable to Rolls Royce Silver Cloud and a two-door sports tourer which was compact and low in price and also production.
These large cars has a lot great features with options like radio, mobile telephone and other business class features. The four door variant was launched in following models: 300, 300b, 300c and 300d. It is apt for politicians and businessmen with features like dividing partitions and for other features like this. The two-door versions was launched in 2+2 coupe, cabriolet and roadster versions.
Models and Features
The 4-door version of the car was launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show in April 1951 and went into manufacture in November 1951. It had a graceful top body with typical Mercedes X-frame chassis. It also has 3.0L (2996cc /182 in3) overhead cam and aluminum head. The gearbox is manual with 4-speed options with downdraft Solex carburetors. The engine is sturdy with deep water jackets and has thermostatic control oil cooling to work in diverse climates and varying road types. The car can reach its top speed easily and can sustain even on high-speeds even under difficult weather conditions. The 6 passenger types car has a very good lubrication system fitted in the car and a spacious and creative dashboard with amazing suspension and a bar that adds to the safety specs of the car. It is high on safety and is not accident prone.
Options and Packages
A version of the car has doors that just don’t open , it lifts up. You need to lift the door to get in and the door gives the gull-wing look. The sill is very wide and the seats are comfortable. It gives a cockpit like of a feel to it. The internal of the car makes it to prove the feel of the cockpit. It has high-performance interior and weapons grade machinery. The cabin is compact and has aerodynamic resistance and a massive engine. The model is called Gullywing.
The 300d model has a much better wheelbase, fuel injection and unique hardtop giving it look of a pillar less phaeton. It has greater space in the back which gives it a similar look like Rolls Royce Silver Cloud. The rear quarter lights can be removed and there is totally same view in and out from the front window. Power brakes, power steering and Artic-Kar air-conditioning adds to the luxury of the car and gives it a royal feel. Additions like cup-holder, back seat cushion seats, alloy wheels, large front gear and elongated length gives it a vintage look and makes it a choice for the business class people.
Fuel Economy
The car has an sturdy engine which is a four cylinder 3.5L V6, 24 Valves unit. The heavy wheels which are made with combining steel and alloy and it has overhead camshafts with total 16 valves which are fitted in its combustion chamber. The sport version of the car which was launched has heavier steering for amazing road grip. These changes improved the fuel efficiency of the car to 20 in the city / 27 on the highway mpg and it is a very flexible engine with a very flat torque curve and a wide power band.
Exterior/Interior/Styling
The outer frame of Mercedes Benz 300 was made of ovoid steel tubes , with a double wishbone shaped coil, spring axle and stabilizer bar in the front. The rear swing axle is a typical double coil which is typical of Mercedes. There are hydraulic brakes in the car and the steering is worm-and –sector type which is replaced by a recirculating ball unit in 1952. The car comes in two models the Comfort and Sport models. Apart from that there is the Gullywing model as well.
The car comes with 16 color options for the exterior and 6 color options for the interior. The car comes with safety measures like anti-theft and wheel locks. External lighting has fog lights and perimeter lighting apart from the standard automatic headlights. The seats are vinyl coated and the front seats are power adjustable giving high-end comfort to the driver so that he can focus on the driving. The amazing set of accessories like Stereo / MP3, Driver assistance , AMG Aerodynamics and Performance manager makes it tech savvy choice for the youth.
Safety Ratings
As far as safety is concerned there can be no other name other than Mercedes. As far as safety is concerned the car can be rated 7/10. The car is heavy and royal and takes time to reach the top speed. There are several accessories in-built into the car for safety. It includes theft control , wheel locks, vehicle tracking code, child lock control and valet locking facilities. The wheels are sturdy and huge and provide safety on all road types. You can drive a Mercedes Benz 300 on stony terrains as well as bumpy city roads in all seasons. It works fine even on wet and dry roads too.
Overall the car can be rated as 7/10. The car has amazing royal looks and heavy and sturdy body with awesome variants and color options. The car is high on comfort. The good thing about the engine is aerosoft superior grip and suspension which keeps it on-road even when the surface is uneven reducing the chance of an accident. Also it has several techy features which were not possible in 1950. The look and steering is apt for business class people and also the price of the car. It is a bit expensive as compared to other cars with comparative features.
